On-site recycling cuts costs along the new US/Mexico border fence

Knowing about the massive benefits of the compact but powerful and above all mobile RUBBLE MASTER impact crushers from former applications, Granite Construction knew whom to call about crushing native rock in very remote areas.

Incorporated in 1922, Granite Construction Company is one of the nation's largest heavy civil contractors and construction materials producers, best known for transportation infrastructure projects including roads, highways, tunnels, bridges mass transit facilities and airports which are used by millions of people every day. Through its two operating divisions Granite is equally effective at building both large and small jobs.

Brawley, CA based Elms Equipment Rental, Inc., an authorized RUBBLE MASTER dealer for many years, provides the right tools for tough jobs. Here again mobility was the key to success, when natural rock (granite) had to be crushed along the new US/Mexico border fence near monument 250 just east of San Diego, CA. Alan Huber, President of Elms, recommended the crawler mounted RM80, an impact crusher made easy to haul to any job site thanks to weighing only 25.4 tons and featuring compact dimensions. The RM80 was quickly delivered to where the road ended for the transport truck. From there the crusher made its way “by foot”, driven via remote control by the operator walking next to the machine. After 8 hours the RM80 reached the project area and immediately started to process the material excavated from a 4’ x 6’ over excavated footing trench to 2” minus material.

Due to the highly developed RUBBLE MASTER crusher technology - being the ones who invented compact mobile recycling over 18 years ago and setting standards in this industry ever since – RUBBLE MASTER Compact Recyclers like the RM80 stand out through excellent intake behaviour and throughput continuity. Producing high-value aggregates on-site in one pass with a single operator has proven project after project to be the most cost effective solution Crushed materials were utilized for roadways and footing trench backfill. Applying the RM80 helped to cut costs, especially where the finish product was utillized as footing backfill, allowing Granite to greatly reduce the amount of footing cement needed, a very high cost product in this very remote area. Crushing operations were conducted for 29.2 days spread over several months.
